Implementing EPCS


While many elements of a well-orchestrated EPCS project plan will mirror those of any major initiative, there are several key considerations to successfully enable EPCS. In order to successfully introduce EPCS into your workflow, you should:

  • Work with your EMR provider to ensure their system has been sufficiently audited by an accredited third-party, and certified for EPCS. Organizations should obtain written proof of certification when audits are complete.
  • Contact Imprivata to learn more about Imprivata Confirm ID to successfully implement a secure e-prescribing solution that meets the DEA’s requirements for EPCS, including:
  • Notify local pharmacies that your organization is going to start prescribing controlled substances electronically. By notifying pharmacies, you can ensure that they are prepared to receive your electronic prescriptions for controlled substances. If some of the pharmacies you contact are not EPCS-enabled, it would beneficial to provide your provider team with a list of pharmacies that can accept prescriptions for controlled substances.
